The most impressive turnaround within the group stages of the FIFA World Cup 2026 was that made by Argentinians, who managed to score 3 goals in the remaining 30 minutes and beat Egypt 3-2. Thus, Argentinians are set to have an unbeaten record at the group stage of this World Cup and will face Switzerland.
Although Argentina did not possess the ball, the fearless Egypt players scored an early goal in the 15th minute. Despite playing a cautious game against Argentina, the Egypt players scored two goals more when they were in counterattack mode in the 67th minute to take the scoreline to 2-0. It can be noted from the fact that Egypt recorded only four shots in the entire game that they made the most of the few opportunities they had in the game.
In contrast, Argentina dominated possession of the ball all through the game and ended up recording 58% ball possession and 17 shots, while Egypt only recorded four shots. However, because of their effective finishing and waste by Argentina, the latter had to taste defeat in less than 25 minutes of playtime remaining.
The substitution strategy used by Scaloni just past the hour mark turned out to be a wise move. With the new legs brought in the 66th and 73rd minutes, respectively, the Argentine attack got rejuvenated. The fightback started in the 79th minute when they managed to cut down the deficit to one goal and set the stage for a thrilling finish.
Four minutes later, in the 83rd minute, Argentina levelled the game at 2-2 and thus changed the entire flow of the game. In the last minute of injury time in the 90th minute, the Argentine side pulled off an astonishing comeback with a winner, taking the scoreline to 3-2. Egypt received four yellows in quick succession in the dying moments of the game.
- Shots: Argentina 17 (7 on target) vs Egypt 4 (2 on target)
- Posession: Argentina 58% vs Egypt 42%
- Corner kicks: Argentina 6 vs Egypt 1
- Yellow cards: Egypt collected 4 yellow cards, while Argentina came out of the match without any cards.
The forward line of Argentina with Messi, Julian Alvarez, and many substitutes who can attack, such as Giuliano Simeone, Nico Paz, and Jose Manuel Lopez, was simply too strong for the defense of Egypt, which had remained solid for more than one hour.
This victory adds to the Argentine team's impressive record of dominance, having previously beaten the Algerian, Austrian, and Jordanian teams, besides managing to beat Cape Verde with a scoreline of 3-2. The next match for Argentina is against Switzerland, which is already considered a crucial match to determine the first-place position within the group.
In regard to the Egypt team, despite the loss, the style of play displayed by the team in this match, with a focus on solid defense and effective counter-attack, can provide some reassurance that the team remains competitive even in defeat, in this case, against one of the favorites of the competition.
