In his storied career, Christopher Nolan has never graced a film premiere in the country of India until now. In an event long awaited by fans and trade alike, Nolan premiered his latest blockbuster, The Odyssey, in Mumbai over two days—marking what could be described as a landmark event for Indian cinema.
The event took place on July 10th and 11th, 2026, at PVR ICON, Phoenix Palladium, in Mumbai's Lower Parel region. Just before its theatrical release in India, the event allowed the country's audience an exclusive screening of the highly anticipated Hollywood film.
What makes the event special is the location of the city within Nolan’s global marketing map. In his list of four cities to have premieres of his movie, Mumbai occupies an important place alongside London, Paris, and New York. This is a big statement for the director whose movies have for many years been favorites in India. This speaks volumes about the importance that the Indian market has gained within the international box office market, especially regarding premium screening formats such as IMAX.
Preceding events demonstrated this fact even before the stars had landed in India. Pre-booking of the tickets for the screening of his film in IMAX format began in the beginning of June, and in a very short period, around 45 percent of the total tickets available in India had already been sold, based on statistics from PVR INOX.
There is no dearth of drama in the run-up to the premiere as well. The first person to reach from the delegation was none other than Tom Holland, who was spotted coming out of Mumbai's Kalina airport amidst security and mobs of fans and cameras. Christopher Nolan was not too far away either, with his wife and producing partner Emma Thomas beside him. Nolan gave a wave to the clicking photographers and then went into the custody of the bodyguards, and that was enough to create some excitement on social media.
Then Matt Damon, who plays the lead role of Odysseus in the film, came in as well. Thus, there were two days of suspense surrounding the film that turned out to be the most exciting event in Bollywood till date from the world of Hollywood.

While the entrance was impressive, it is safe to say that the film itself was equally promising. Prior to the big premiere of the movie, a fan screening took place in the city of Mumbai. Not only did the Indian audience give their response that would not be forgotten by Nolan, but also the way they reacted to his presence during the movie was noteworthy. Once the credits started rolling, Nolan was greeted with whistles, cheers, and a standing ovation as he entered the room to address the audience.
“Thank you so much on behalf of all of us for doing this,” Nolan said. “It is the first time, and you were amongst the first to witness this.” Then he engaged the audience in discussion by asking whether they liked the movie.
As for something lighthearted, Nolan posed a challenge for the audience to find out which was better among the two—Matt or Tom. The audience smartly passed the baton back to Nolan, much to the amusement of everyone present there. With a smile on his face, Nolan diplomatically sidestepped the query with "They are both fantastic."
Also, Nolan mentioned his connection with the country in relation to his past experience of filming in India. "It is my good fortune that I have filmed in this amazing nation two times, first in Jodhpur and secondly in Mumbai. Every time we come here, it is an extremely special experience for us," he mentioned. He further said that he has been wanting to visit and release one of his films here for quite some time now. " For several years now, I have been wanting to come and launch our film here and experience it with such enthusiastic moviegoers as you all."
However, there was more significance to the screening of the movie in Mumbai to Matt Damon. While he, together with some members of the cast, had already viewed the movie informally among friends and family members, the screening was going to be the first time they were to gauge the audience’s reaction to the film. “This was our first screening of the movie to an audience. So the applause of the people of Mumbai was the first actual response I got to the movie.”
The Odyssey is a movie that is based on the novel The Odyssey written by Homer. In the movie, Nolan describes the ten-year trip that Odysseus makes to reach home after the Trojan War.
The lead role goes to Matt Damon, with Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Charlize Theron, and John Leguizamo completing the cast list for this epic movie.
Technically, the project also holds some great importance. It is known to be the first full-length movie shot entirely with IMAX cameras. This was made possible only through the development of a special camera for the process. This movie fits perfectly well into his oeuvre of experimenting with larger-format movies. of that legacy — and one that makes the IMAX-heavy ticket demand in India all the more understandable.
The film is set for a worldwide theatrical release on July 17, 2026, following its Mumbai premiere by less than a week.
To Mumbai, a city that has never hidden its love for films, this is more than just a promotional pit-stop. This decision represents a new level of confidence of global production studios in the idea that Indian viewers, specifically those who can afford premium format screenings in India, have become critical to the planning process of a major movie's release, not an optional addition to the process after everything else is done.
Moreover, this is an opportunity for direct interaction between one of the most celebrated directors of contemporary cinema and a community of fans who have been supporting him for decades from afar.
The reaction in the auditorium—the standing ovation without a single word being said and the laughter at Nolan's question—seemed to be more of an expression of mutual appreciation than just promotion.
