his is considered to be India's finest performance in the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games as they emerged victorious when their para athlete Dilip Mahadu Gavit won gold in the men's 100 metres T47 category while their teammate Mohammed Basil Morssinganakath took silver after he came second to Gavit in the race.
The time taken by Gavit in the race is 10.71 seconds which is not only a Games record but also the season best performance for Gavit to get the gold medal. Basil did not lag behind either and performed his season best timing of 10.83 seconds in the race to win the silver medal. Kevin Santos from England took the bronze medal with timing of 10.85 seconds.
Having seen the achievements of Gavit, there is no harm in respecting him because of his background. As he was born into a poor family of farmers, Gavit comes from a village known as Toran Dongari which is situated near Nashik in Maharashtra.
Since his childhood days, Gavit always wanted to assist his parents in farming. At the age of 5 to 6 years old, Gavit had an accident, where he fell off from a tree and injured himself in his right arm. Neglecting this obstacle and not allowing this obstacle to deter him, Gavit started training himself by running on the road of his village.However, in the days that followed, Gavit managed to capture the attention of Vaijnath Kale, and Kale had requested Gavit to teach him para athletics.Nonetheless, Gavit managed to make many achievements including obtaining a gold medal in the 2022 Asian Para Games conducted in Hangzhou, China. However, it is crucial to state that the gold medal which he had won was his one hundredth gold medal for the same competition.
Competing in the 400m T47 Men’s category, Gavit participated in the 2024 Paralympics, taking place in Paris.
Another equally spectacular performance was that of Mohammed Basil Morssinganakath, who made India earn a medal in the event and thus earned India the chance to win not just one but two medals.
The race is reported to have been a very close one for the two Indian participants who managed to clock their fastest time of the season. Therefore, the second and third places won by India in the T47 category, which is for athletes with unilateral upper limb deficiency, adds one more achievement to the already increasing tally of achievements of India at the Paralympic games.
Medals of gold and silver secured by India in the race of T47 100m have become the third and the fourth medals of India on the same day at the Commonwealth Games that are being hosted in Glasgow, following a series of events conducted by the Indian athletes.
Long jumper Murali Sreeshankar initiated India's medal streak by winning a silver in the men's long jump category, scoring a personal best jump of 8.09 meters on his second attempt after leading the race in his first attempt, but then fouling in his fourth attempt, and dropping to second position.
As it was quite clear that he had earned the distinction of being the first ever male long jumper of India who had won two Commonwealth Games medals, one each in Commonwealth Games 2021 and 2022 at Birmingham.
Apart from this, Mirabai Chanu won the gold medal in the category of women’s weightlifting in 48 kg on the same day as well as Sharmila Dhankar won gold in women's shot put F57 para.
However, not all of the Indian athletes were successful enough to manage getting a podium place on that day, some almost managing to do so. For instance, on the athletics track, Manpreet Kaur managed only to finish the women’s shot put event fourth with the result of 17.49 meters, thus missing the bronze medal.
Suyash Jadhav of the swimming pool also lost out on podium by 0.3 seconds to finish fourth in the 50m freestyle S7 event for men with the timing of 31.63 seconds, whereas Chaitanya Kulkarni ended fifth in the same category.
Finally, the other long jumper Lokesh Sathyanathan, competing against Sreeshankar, won fifth position in the men’s long jump event, leaping to 7.97 meters.
It could not go unnoticed by the highest leaders of Indian society. The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, congratulated both Gavit and Basil on their success in the men's 100 metre T47 competition for winning gold and silver medals, respectively. Such an act of acknowledgment is only one of the many signs of respect which Indian nation demonstrates to its disabled athletes. Disabled athletes from India are getting increasingly recognized, and become an integral part of Indian sports achievements.
Thus, for instance, Gavit himself succeeded in overcoming many obstacles in order to achieve his success in international competitions. Thus, their achievements become an integral part of India's success story.
