The Numbers Behind the Noise

A ccording to a new leak doing the rounds, the iPhone 18 Pro Max will actually ship in two battery flavors, not one. The eSIM-only version — the one sold in markets like the US that ditched the physical SIM tray is tipped to pack a 5,425 mAh cell.

The version that keeps a physical SIM slot comes in a little smaller at 5,235 mAh.

Neither number is small talk. Compare that to the iPhone 17 Pro Max, where the eSIM model sits at 5,088 mAh and the SIM-slot version at 4,823 mAh. That's a jump of roughly 337 mAh and 412 mAh respectively a genuinely large bump by iPhone standards, where battery increases usually creep up in double digits, not triple

Bigger Than Samsung's Flagship?

Here's the part that'll raise eyebrows: if this leak holds up, the iPhone 18 Pro Max's smaller variant would still edge out the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra's 5,000 mAh battery.
That's not a typo "Apple potentially out-batterying Samsung's own Ultra flagship". Worth remembering, though, that leaks this specific always come with an asterisk. Nothing's confirmed until Apple says so in September.

It's Not Just About the Cell Size

A bigger battery is only half the battery-life story, and this year Apple seems to be attacking it from multiple angles at once.

The A20 Pro chip — expected to be Apple's first built on a 2-nanometer process is rumored to bring close to 30% better power efficiency over the current A19 Pro, on top of a performance bump. Pair that with Apple's next-gen C2 modem, which is reportedly replacing Qualcomm hardware in the Pro lineup, and the efficiency gains could end up mattering more than the raw mAh figure.

  • Price: With RAM and chip costs climbing, some analysts expect the Pro Max to cost more than last year's model.
