Giorgia Meloni, the prime minister of Italy, made one of the strong and direct responses to the U.S.

President Donald Trump. When Trump made some controversial remarks against her on Italian television, Meloni did not hold back.

Instead, she immediately used social media to post a video in which she laid out her stance and the stance of Italy.

These were her closing remarks in the video:

"Italy and I do not beg."

What Started This Fight?

All this started very early on June 19th, 2026, which happened to be a Friday. During his interview conducted by Trump at an Italian TV station called La7, Trump drifted away from the subject matter of the interview.

That is, while discussing the issue of the war in Ukraine during the interview, Trump decided to talk about Meloni.

The G7 summit is one of the most significant summits where seven of the richest nations meet together. This summit took place in Evian-les-Bains, France, this year.

All the heads of state met and discussed many issues of the whole world, such as wars, the economy, trade, and others.

The norm followed by all the member nations during this summit includes taking photographs every time they meet for anything other than taking photographs.

However, Trump made it something else.

According to the channel, Trump said that Meloni "begged" him to take the photograph because "she begged me to take a picture with her.

She wanted a picture with me so badly. I wouldn't have taken it, but I felt sorry for her."

Such statements were indeed shocking.

Not only because of their offensive nature, but also because of who made such statements and about whom.

President Trump was making offensive statements about the prime minister of Italy, an ancient and longstanding ally of the United States in Europe.

The statements were broadcasted live on TV.

Meloni's Immediate Response

The actions of Meloni began almost instantly. She did not hold any press conference, and she did not issue any statement from her office. She went straight to the people.

She made a video in which she described the words of Trump as "totally false" and expressed her amazement at the fact that the president of the USA managed to invent such a complete lie about his ally.

She spoke calmly and firmly. It was obvious that she had to react to this situation since she was speaking about her country's pride and truth.

Meloni stressed out that "there are some things that deserve an immediate reaction" and that what Trump says about her and her country "is totally made up, and I don't understand how the president of the USA can treat his allies like this."

She stressed that this was not the first case when something like that happened.

Then came something that became the main point of discussion for all the world media. Meloni said, "There is one thing that he must always keep in mind—neither I nor my country asks for anything."

She also took a direct shot at Trump's approach to world politics. She said it was a pity that Trump does not show the same strength and determination with the enemies of the West and the enemies of the United States—leaders with whom he is, in fact, far more accommodating.

In simple words, she was saying, "Trump is tough with his friends but soft with his enemies. "That is not how a strong leader should behave.

Italy's Government Stands United:

What is crucial concerning the mentioned actions of Meloni is the fact that she did not act on her own.

All the Italian government supported Meloni and condemned Trump's remarks.

Antonio Tajani, Italian minister for foreign affairs, stated that he is not going to visit the USA anymore.

It was planned to meet Trump on June 21-22.

According to his statement posted on Twitter, "The words of Mr. Trump are serious and offensive for all of Italy."

This decision can be regarded as a rather drastic one, because no country simply cancels the diplomatic meeting.

So, we can assume that Trump's words exceeded all limits, even from the American perspective.

Another representative of the Italian government who acted near Meloni gave his opinion regarding the mentioned incident.

According to his statements, the words of Trump were "delirious," and they are the latest offense for European politicians.

He wonders whether the historical relations between Europe and America are being destroyed intentionally or due to Trump's incompetence.

A Friendship That Has Been Breaking Down

It is therefore imperative to look at the political relationship of the two politicians so as to comprehend the significance of the above-stated event.

The two politicians were allies until very recently and hold conservative opinions and ideas.

Meloni was part of the inaugural ceremony of Trump in the year 2025. Actually, Meloni is one of the very few European political leaders who can be termed a strong ally of Trump in Europe. While many European politicians avoided Trump, Meloni took the initiative to build a cordial relationship with him.

However, there has been recent deterioration in the relationship.

Trump recently attacked Pope Leo XIII because of his anti-war attitudes. When Meloni commented on this issue, saying that it was unacceptable, Trump reacted sharply, saying that he was shocked at Meloni and that even though she is brave, she is misguided. He further said that he would withdraw the American military from Italy since Italy had done nothing for the United States.

Trump once criticized Meloni when she refused to support the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran. This time, Meloni did not say anything.

But it was different from any other time. It was because this time Trump took a different turn. Instead of criticizing her policies and decisions, he mocked her right in front of her people on an Italian TV channel.

Why Meloni Chose to Speak This Time:

Something worth noting here is that Meloni has been patient with Trump previously. While he was criticizing her regarding Iran, she remained silent. While he was threatening Italy, she remained calm. But when he accused her of having "begged" him, she replied right away and openly.

Why? Because this was not about any policy dispute. This was about her personal dignity and that of her nation. As a leader who has created an entire career around the concept of Italian pride and dignity, she could not ignore the remarks.

The tone of her video message was not angry or emotional. On the contrary, it was composed and factual. She did not yell. She did not weep. She simply stated the facts.

What Happens Next?

This is no longer just a dispute between two individual leaders. This is a strain in relations between the U.S. and one of its closest allies in Europe. Italy is part of NATO and G7. It houses U.S. military installations. There are historic, cultural, and economic ties between these two nations.

The cancellation by the Italian foreign minister of his visit to Washington D.C., the use of words such as "deliriums" and "incompetence" by senior officials while talking about the U.S. president, and the calling of the president of the United States a liar on social media by the Italian prime minister—all of this is a serious diplomatic issue.

The rest of the world will watch how Trump deals with the situation.

Summary

Giorgia Meloni is a prominent political leader. Meloni managed to become one of the leading women in Italy’s politics through hard work and decades of political experience. Meloni is a person running a government, handling alliances, and meeting some of the most influential people in the world on a daily basis.

It could never have been expected from the US president of America, Donald Trump, that during an interview with Italian media, he would claim that Giorgia Meloni begged him for a picture.

A video. A calm voice. And six words that said everything:

"Italy and I do not beg."
